France, Latvia, and Romania win gold medals at the European Union Youth Chess Championships Print

The European Union Youth Chess Championships 2008 have finished and the medalists are already known. The biggest triumph was for France, who participated with only 4 players, but managed to take two gold medals. They were for Gary Giroyan in the U12 group and Bilel Bellahcene in the U10 group. Adding to that the first place for girls U8 for Mathilde Broly and the first place for girls of Salome Neuhauser in the U14 group makes the success of France complete.

The gold medal in the U14 group went to Nikita Meskovs from Latvia. He was the top rated of the competition, together with his countrymate Toms Kantans who took the bronze. The silver was for Tomas Laurusas from Lithuania.

The U8 group was dominated by the Romanian Mihnea Costachi who finished a full point ahead of the others.
