The first games of the World Cup are finished. Almost all the favorites defeated their noticeably lower rated opponents. Of the unexpected results one can point out the loss of Russian champion Evgeny Alekseev to a young Kazak Anuar Ismagambetov, and the loss of the former World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov, who was beaten by Egyptian Essam El Gindy. White won 19 games, Black won 13 games, and 30 games were drawn. The share of decisive games in this round exceeded 50%.



A press conference of Alexander Filippenko, governor of the Khanty-Mansy autonomous region, and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE president, was carried out at 3.30 pm.
