FIDE President continues his visit to Singapore Print

FIDE President, Head of the Republic of Kalmykia visited Singapore to inspect the FIDE Office in Singapore and to attend the on-going World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad. FIDE President was accompanied by FIDE General Secretary, President of Singapore Chess Federation and Head of the Chess Academy in Singapore Mr. Ignatius Leong. FIDE President, Head of the Republic of Kalmykia visited Singapore to inspect the FIDE Office in Singapore and to attend the on-going World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad. FIDE President was accompanied by FIDE General Secretary, President of Singapore Chess Federation and Head of the Chess Academy in Singapore Mr. Ignatius Leong.

On 10 August, Mr. Ilyumzhinov met with the representatives of the teams from 34 federations that are participating in the Youth Olympiad. Also, FIDE President visited Singapore Chess Academy where he met with parents of the children who attend the academy and learn how to play chess.

The same day FIDE President met with the Deputy Director of the New Businesses Group in the Economic Development Board of Singapore Mr. Chan Kah Guan. FIDE President shared with the Singapore authority the plans of the World Chess Federation to construct chess centers and chess hotels "Chess line city" all over the world. EDB welcomed Mr Ilyumzhinov’s idea to build a chess hotel in Singapore and offered help on introductions to the relevant government agencies for facilitation on start-up issues.

The issue of the possible inclusion of chess into the school programme in Singapore was also a topic of discussion at the meeting. It was noted that Chess Academy in Singapore and the new office of FIDE serve as a good motivation for children and might help to make the idea of "Chess in School" come true.

In his turn, Mr. Chan informed Mr. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov on the plans of Singapore Government to construct a huge Sport Center by 2010. The conditions for about 20 kind of sports will be created in the Sport Center with the facilities of the Head-quarters for 20 World sport federations to be set up in it as well. Mr. Chan has also mentioned that chess has great chances to be included into the programme of the Chess Center in Singapore as well.


On 11 August, Mr. Ilyumzhinov took part in the closing ceremony of the World Youth Chess Olympiad U-16. Before the ceremony the FIDE President met with the Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports of Singapore, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan.

They discussed the cooperation between FIDE and Singapore Government on development of chess in Asian countries. Head of the Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President noted a great work of Singapore Chess Academy. Mr. Balakrishnan on behalf of the Singapore Government has invited an official delegation of Republic of Kalmykia to visit Singapore for further discussion of the mutual collaboration. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Igor Evdokimov, Minister-counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Singapore.
