National Federation Rating Officers were given direct access to the FIDE rating system online with the launching this year of the FIDE Ratings Server. This major improvement allows password holders to register tournaments, submit reports online and give FIDE ID numbers to new players. Final rating remains in the control of the FIDE Rating Administrator. Rating Officers may directly correct spellings, birthdate and sex of players from their country only. The new system recognizes the important work that National Federation Rating Officers contribute to the FIDE Rating System.

All players with FIDE ID numbers can be searched including unrated players.

In accordance with the Turin Congress decision, this year only the Krause format is accepted by the system. A number of FIDE-approved Swiss System programs have since last year added a button to produce reports in the Krause format.

This is a milestone in the development of the FIDE Ratings. When the ratings book was being distributed in print, we supplmented it with ratings on diskettes in the 80`s. Then we mailed out all individual calculations on CD`s in the 90`s. With the advent of the web, dissemination became worldwide. Last year we innovated with publication of game by game ratings following the decision of the Qualification Commission.

Our policy has been transparency in all data and calculations. With openness we earn trust and respect for the FIDE Ratings system. We have extended this openness to the Title Application system by publishing on the web all Title Certificates with links to the Rating Reports.

The FIDE Ratings are the work of all FIDE members. Further improvements are in the works and we thank all who help produce the FIDE Ratings, all the FIDE Commission chairmen and members who help draft the regulations and to all National Federations, Rating Officers and Arbiters.

Our next step is standardization of names, spelling and character sets, soon with multi-language diacretic characters. Please correct the spelling of your players` names and use the spelling in the FIDE database.
