FIDE President Meets Iranian Chess Federation President on chess developments in Iran Print

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met today with the President of the Iranian Chess Federation, Dr. Mohammad Ebrahim Maddahi, who is in Elista to attend the Candidates matches 2007. The Iranian FIDE delegate, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, was present at the meeting as well. Dr. Maddahi reported to the FIDE President on the progress in chess development in Iran that has been achieved during three years of his Presidency. Three years ago, Iran was on the 13th place in the country chess rating, thus now, they are on the 7th place. on the meeting.

Today, 27 May 2007, the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met the President of the Iranian Chess Federation, who is in Elista to attend the Candidates matches 2007. The Iranian FIDE delegate Mr. Pahlevanzadeh was present at the meeting as well. Mr. Maddahi reported to the FIDE President on the progress in the chess development in Iran that has been achieved during three years of his Presidency. Three years ago, Iran was on the 13th place in the country chess rating, thus now, they are on the 7th place.

Two newly awarded Iranian International Grandmasters joined three existing before. Two WIM norms have been achieved as well. During the Asian Games 2006 which were held in Doha, Qatar in December last year, Iran took the bronze.

The Iranian Chess President expressed the wish of the Iranian Chess Federation to hold the big chess event of the World level. In his turn, the FIDE President proposed to hold the World Women`s Individual Chess Championship 2008 in Iran. Mr. Maddahi promised to consider the possibilities and he will inform FIDE by the next FIDE Presidential Board meeting.

Mr. Maddahi also informed the FIDE President that the President of Iran, Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made a decision to introduce chess into the school programme. Now, the new school system with inclusion of chess is being developed.

The Iranian Chess Federation would also like to hold the Iranian Chess Olympiad with three stages. At first stage, there will be 3000 chess teams, with 100 teams to go for the second stage, and 30 teams in the finals.

The Iranian Chess President has informed the FIDE President that chess in Iran has been introduced as mother sport among all other sports in Iran. Other sportsmen of Iran were proposed to play chess, which could help them in their sport achievements as well.
