FIDE President meets the Patriarch of Russia, His Holiness Alexey II Print

Today, 5 February 2007, the FIDE President, the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met the Patriarch of Russia, His Holiness Alexey II. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov informed His Holiness on the situation of the development of Orthodoxy in the Kalmyk Republic, showed the photographs of the Orthodox churches constructed recently and shared with Alexey II the plans to construct two more Orthodox churches. One of the new churches will be named after Saint Panteleimon. At the end of the meeting Kirsan Ilyumzhinov presented to His Holiness Alexey II the handmade chess set and invited Patriarch of Russia to visit the Republic of Kalmykia. Read more and see photos.

Today, 5 February 2007, the FIDE President, the Head of the Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met the Patriarch of Russia, His Holiness Alexey II.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov informed His Holiness on the situation of the development of Orthodoxy in the Kalmyk Republic, showed the photographs of the Orthodox churches constructed recently in Kalmykia and shared with Alexey II the plans to construct two more Orthodox churches. One of the new churches will be named after Saint Panteleimon.

The Patriarch of Russia in his turn expressed his opinion that chess, being an intellectual game among all other sports, brings positive drive to the development of the new generation.

The FIDE President briefed His Holiness on the FIDE programmes in the different countries, including the Chess in Schools programme. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Alexey II agreed that it is necessary to contunue developing chess among children and youth, which can be considered as piety that promotes morality among the younger generation.

At the end of the meeting Kirsan Ilyumzhinov presented to His Holiness Alexey II a handmade chess set and invited the Patriarch of Russia to visit the Republic of Kalmykia. It was provisionally decided that the visit will coincide with the day that His Holiness will bless the foundation stone of the new Orthodox Church named after Saint Panteleimon.
