Topalov Declines Draw by Repetition and Kramnik Wins Print

In the first game of the World Championship Match, Vladimir Kramnik beat Veselin Topalov in 75 moves and six and a half hours. In a drawing position, Topalov refused to repeat moves, pressed for a win and blundered on the 57th move. Alexander Zhukov, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, President of the Russian Chess Federation and Organizing Committee Chairman, makes the first move of the match. Looking on are, from left, Deputy Arbiter Panagiotis Nikolopoulos; Chief of the Federal Agency on Physical Training and Sports Vyacheslav Fetisov; FIDE President and President of the Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Chief Arbiter Geurt Gijssen and Valery Bovaev, Vice President of the Russian Chess Federation.

Both candidates for the World Chess Champion title Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) and Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) were satisfied with the results of the pairings and stated that the right to make the first move in the Match is not of great importance for them.

- Vladimir, did you expect that you would play with white in the first game?

Vladimir: The color of the pieces in the first game is not that important for me. We will play the equal number of games with equal number of pieces` color. But I liked very much the pairings procedure. It was very beautiful.

- Are you in a good shape now?

Vladimir: I am always in a perfect shape. This event, World Chess Championship Match, is very important for me. I am fully ready for the fight.

- Veselin, what is your mood before the match?

Veselin: After this nice Opening Ceremony I am in a very good mood. It was very colorful Opening Ceremony; I was very pleased that attended it. I hope that all the games will be also fascinating.

- Would you prefer to have this match in some other neutral place, not in Russia?

Veselin: I think that this is a territory of FIDE that is why I don`t have any problems with it.

Today, on 23 September at 15.00 in the afternoon the World Chess Championship Match starts. The Deputy Prime Minister of Russian Federation, the President of the Russian Chess Federation Alexandr Zhukov will make the first move.
