Anatoly Karpov visits Elista Print

Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov visited Elista, Kalmyk Republic on 19th and 20th July 2006 at the invitation of the President of the Kalmyk Republic, FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. On 20th July, Karpov congratulated the FIDE President and all people on the occasion of International Chess Day, which is the day of the founding of FIDE in 1924. Karpov and the FIDE President played a demonstration game on giant pieces at the Central Elista square. Karpov also gave a simultaneous exhibition against the young chess players of Kalmykia.

As a member of the Social Palace of Russian Federation dealing with Preservation of the Environment, Karpov took part in the Session of the Russian Nature Supervision Committee, where the important questions of the Caspian Sea ecology were discussed.
