The incredible scandal which was provoked by the Spanish Organizing Committee during the Closing Ceremony of the 2004 Chess Olympiad, with the overt hostility towards FIDE Vice-President Mr Zurab Azmaiparashvili and his consequent unjustifiable beating and arrest from Anti-Terrorist Special Forces, has had a tremendous negative impact for the image of our sport.

Honourable Mr. President,

We would like to express to you personally and to all FIDE, and all Chess Federations, the sincere gratitude for the just support and help given to a Georgian chess player, International Grandmaster Zurab Azmaiparashvili in connection to the incident during the closing of the Chess Olympiad in Spain.

The Board of the Georgian Chess Federation having considered this issue, has resolved to request you to undertake necessary punitive measures in respect of the Olympiad Organisers and all those who were responsible to ensure order during the organisation of the Olympiad. The punishment of those who have faltered in the situation, will be a guarantee against the repetition of this incident.
