FIDE has a pleasure to finalize the Information on the World Chess Championship 2003-2004 which will take place from June 18 till July 13, 2004 in Tripoli, Libya. The Championship will be held under the patronage of the Leader of the Libyan Jamahirya, H.E. Moammar Al Gathafi, who also provides the prize fund for the Championship.

After receiving notice that several Israeli websites are reporting Libya to have cancelled the invitation to certain participants of the upcoming World Chess Championship, FIDE requested a clarification by the Libyan Organizing Committee of the event.
Libyan Organizing Committee of the 2004 World Chess Championship confirmed that the LOC invitation to all WCC 2004 participants, dated 26-4-2004, is still valid.

The President of the Libyan Olympic Committee, Eng. Mohammad Moammar Al Gathafi, invites all the qualified participants of the World Chess Championship 2004 in Tripoli, Libya for a most exciting event. The Great Socialist Peoples Libyan Arab Jamahiriya will pleasantly provide entry visas to all the qualified participants of this great Championship. No parallel event will be organized in Malta and all the games of the Championship will be played in Libya.

World Chess Championship 2003-2004 will take place from June 18 till July 13, 2004 in Tripoli, Libya. The Championship will be held under the patronage of the Leader of the Libyan Jamahirya, H.E. Moammar Al Gathafi, who also provides the prize fund for the Championship.

Announcement of the FIDE Secretariat

After a number of relevant questions we received during the past few days concerning the 2004 World Chess Championship we would like to clarify some
Organizational points about the Championship:
a) After the deadline of April 21st, until which all the qualifying players should return their respective undertakings signed, FIDE will announce not later than April 30 its decision about which players, if any, will play in Malta.
b) All local transportation from the airport to the hotel and vice versa will be provided by the organizers.
c) Entry visas for Libya will be obtained in the respective country`s Libyan Embasssy. For players in whose countries there is no Libyan Embassy or Libyan Consulate, entry visas will be provided on arrival at the Tripoli airport. The same applies for accompanying persons and journalists provided they have informed the organizers about their arrival at least one month before.
d) No local tax will be imposed by the government of Libya on the championship`s prize fund.

Please note that all other information about the venue and the official hotel of the Championship, hotel prices and local contacts of the Organizing Committee will be published on the FIDE website not later than April 30.

For the Libyan Olympic Committee to arrange entry visas for the World Chess Championship 2004, a passport photocopy for each player has to be sent by fax at +218 21 3340637 or by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Invitations will be sent to Libyan embassies in all the countries and for the countries which have not a Libyan embassy or consulate, entry visas will be provided upon arrival at the Tripoli airport.

Note: the Organizing Committee will need the photocopies of the passports of ALL participants of the Championship even the players will get the visa upon arrival at the airport.

The FIDE President H.E Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE Deputy President Mr. Makropoulos and FIDE President Assistant Mr. Balgabaev visited Libya. They met with H.E. Moammar Al Gathafi and the Continental President for Africa Mr. Nizar Elhaj.




H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met with the Libyan Leader H.E. Moammar Al Gathafi at the chess board discussing the coming Championship.




There was the meeting with the President of the Libyan National Olympic Committee, the Chairman of the World Chess Championship Organising Committee, the son of H.E. Moammar Al Gathafi, Mr. Mohammed Al Gathafi. FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos and Continental President for Africa Nizar Elhaj were present. There was also friendly match Kirsan Ilyumzhinov-Mohammed Al Ghatafi which ended in a draw.
