The President of Argentina, H.E Eduardo Duhalde was full of praise for FIDE and its President at a reception he hosted on Wednesday at the Argentine residence in Madrid in honour of Presdent Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. President Duhalde, an avid Chess and Football aficionado thanked FIDE for honouring his country with the proposed hosting of the 2003 Ponomariov-Kasparov World Championship match in Buenos Aires. President Duhalde was confident that the match would open areas of cooperation between FIDE and his country and invited President Ilyumzhinov to visit Buenos Aires in the next fortnight or so to finalise the dates and details for the match.
President Ilyumzhinov in his response thanked President Duhalde for his unwavering support for Chess and for the patronage he granted to the Argentine bid Commitee which under the able leadership of Grandmaster Miguel Quinteros made an excellent presentation at the last Presidential Board meeting in Bucharest. President Ilyunzhinov added that he was looking forward with interest to visiting Buenos Aires, an opportunity which would enable him to settle all matters surrounding the Ponomariov-Kasparov match with the sponsors.
President Ilyumzhinov, who in his capacity as President of the Kalmyk Republic of Russia was participating in the Russian Economic Forum in Madrid, was accompanied to the reception by a Russian delegation. The members included the Permanent Representative of President Vladimir Putin in Southern Russia including Kalmyka and 12 other regions, General Viktor Kazanzev (rtd), H.E. Nikolai Maskuta Governor of Volgograd region, the Russian Ambassador to Spain, H.E. Mikhail Kamanyin and FIDE Executive Director Emmanuel Omuku.
The visit also enabled President Duhalde to exchange views with General Kazanzev on areas of possible co-operation in sports and other fields between Russia and Argentina. Mementos were exchanged at the end of the visit.
