National ratings will not be taken into consideration for the parings. Rate of play will be according to FIDE regulations 90 min for the whole game + 30 sec incr. for every move played.     World Youth Championships 2002, Crete, Greece

    A record 847 players are taking part in the World Youth Championships from 14 to 25 November in Crete, Greece. Counting accompanying adults and coaches, some 1,500 persons have come to this resort island for chess and for fun.

     The competition for boys and girls in the age groups 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 has grown to become as popular as the recently concluded Chess Olympiad. "There are more games per round in the World Youth than in the Olympiad," FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos pointed out. Makro, as he is known in the chess world, is president of the organizing Greek Chess Federation.
