We publish the 1st October 2002 FIDE Rating List, for the first time starting at 1800. FIDE decided to move gradually down to a rating floor of 1000 in order to widen the base of rated players worldwide. FIDE decided to move gradually down to a rating floor of 1000 in order to widen the base of rated players worldwide. Soon we foresee a FIDE Rating List comprising 500,000 players. The 1st October 2002 FIDE Rating List was completed in record time in mid-September, allowing federations and players two weeks to check their Expected Rating Change. The FIDE Elista Office now rates tournaments within 24 hours of receipt. There are 654 tournaments rated for the October list, or some 3,000 tournaments per year. The FIDEonline web site features Individual Calculations and Progress Charts for all players. We envision full rating services via the web, from tournament registration to calculation. With online submission of crosstables, we shall soon fulfill our dream of creating a huge database of tournament tables for use of chess journalists worldwide. Casto Abundo FIDE Rating Administrator
