India Wins Overall Trophy in Asian Youth

India won the overall trophy in the Asian Youth Chess Championship held 31st March to 10th April 2017 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In the combined medal tally of Standard, Rapid and Blitz, India garnered 11 gold medals followed by host Uzbekistan with 8 and Iran with 7 gold medals.

A record 380 players competed in the developmental event. The United Arab Emirates had the biggest foreign delegation of 40 players. The fact that so many parents from the UAE entrusted their children shows the confidence they had in the Uzbek organizers. India was next in delegation size with 35, Kazakhstan with 25, Kyrgyzstan with 23, Vietnam with 27, Iran and Sri Lanka with 21 each, Turkmenistan with 14, China with 13, Afghanistan and Tajikistan with 10 each, Mongolia with 8, Malaysia with 5, Singapore and Hong Kong with 3 each, Korea with 2 and host Uzbekistan rounding off the list with 120 local players.

All delegations were billeted at 4-star hotels, tournament venue Le Grand Plaza and nearby Uzbekistan Hotel. It was a pleasant 5-minute walk in cool weather from one hotel to the other. Here is the final medal tally in Standard chess prepared by Chief Arbiter Gopakumar of India.
