Zhang Pengxiang of China finished alone with 7.5 points to win the 1st President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Cup held 16-24 November 2006 in Manila, Philippines. At the closing, Asian Chess Federation president Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifah Al Nahyan met with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo together with some top placers and National Chess Federation of the Philippines President Congressman Prospero Pichay Jr. and NCFP General Secretary Mayor Abraham Tolentino and FIDE Secretary General Ignatius Leong.

In the courtesy call on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo were National Chess Federation of the Philippines President Prospero Pichay and NCFP Secretary General Mayor Abraham Tolentino.
