As it is very well known, in Turkey there are two traditional open tournaments: Istanbul Chess Festival (40.000 USD prize fund) and Izmir Open (10.200 USD) both being organized this year for the fifth time.

The International Ataturk Chess Festival will be organized under the sponsorship of Seyhan Municipality. Mayor Prof. Dr. Azim Ozturk loves chess, the rising star of Turkish Sport.

Major Ozturk says that chess is the best educational tool to give to children. `Considering the development of chess in Turkey in the last few years, as one of the biggest Municipalities of the country, we are very glad to start the International Ataturk Chess Festival. We invite all countries of the world to taste the Anatolian Hospitality in Adana.`

Major Ozturk also mentioned that the International Ataturk Festival will be organized every year at the same time as a chess classic in Seyhan!

Partners in the organization are Seyhan Municipality, Turkish Chess Foundation and the Turkish Chess Federation.

Where is Adana?

Adana Province is a province with a surface area of 14.030 km2, located in the Mediterranean region of southern Turkey. The provinces adjacent to it are Mersin to the west, Hatay to the southeast, Osmaniye to the east, Kahramanmaras to the northeast, Kayseri to the north, and Nigde to the northwest. Its capital is the city of Adana. The name of the city is believed to have come from a legend that Adanus and Sarus, two sons of Uranus, came to a place near the Seyhan River where they built Adana.

The Adana city is formed from its two main parts: Seyhan and Yuregir. Seyhan, the more developed western part of the city is located on the right side of Seyhan River. Yuregir is located on the left side of the river, and next to NATO`s Incirlik Air Base is located within this province. Seyhan and Yuregir are also the names of central district administrations in the city center. The north of the city is surrounded by the Seyhan Dam Lake, built in 1957. The lake is used to produce electricity, and to provide the irrigation water to the lower part of Cukurova plain, agricultural production area located in the south part of the city. Two irrigation canals in Seyhan part of the city flow to the plain area passing through the city center from east to west. Also there is another canal used for irrigating the Yuregir plain, located on the southeast part of the province.

Other districts of the province are Aladag (formerly Karsanty), Ceyhan (formerly Urfiye), Feke, Imamoglu, Karatas, Kozan (formerly Sis), Pozanty, Saimbeyli (formerly Hacyn/Hacin), Tufanbeyli (formerly Magara), and Yumurtalyk (formerly Ayas).

Adana is famous for its kebab and salgam. Salgam is a salty fermented juice made from purple carrots. Bicibici (pronounced as bee-jee-bee-jee) made from diced su muhallebisi ("water pudding"), red rose water and sugar and served with crushed ice on the top, is also a famous local dessert consumed especially in summer time like ice cream.
