China won the men`s and women`s Asian Team chess titles in Jodhpur, India. The Chinese men finished with 25 points after defeating Malaysia 4-0 in the ninth and last round. The Chinese women, who required only 1.5 points in the last round to win gold, took draws on all the boards to get the required number of points against Turkmenistan to reach 20 points. Opening The Asian Team Chess Championship was inaugurated in a colourful function in Jodhpur on April 7. Despite the Iraq war, 12 teams came for the event which will be a 11-round all-play-all. The first round will commence on April 8 at 2 p.m. The second and third rounds will be held on April 9. The fourth round will be held on April 10. The fifth and sixth rounds will be played on April 11. The rest of the rounds will be played in the morning at 9 a.m. The evening round will be at 3 p.m. The Asian Team Chess was inaugurated by Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court, Bhagawati Prasad, who made a move on the board against Koneru Humpy, the captain of the India B team. Among those who were present at the dais were: PT Ummer Koya, vice-president, World chess federation, SL Harsh, president Asian Zone and many dignitaries from Jodhpur and Rajasthan. Defending champions Uzbekistan were expected to arrive on April 8 morning and this was taken into account when the pairing and format of the event were finalised at the team meeting on April 7. First round ( 2 p.m. on April 8) Pairings: Men: Kyrsystan vs India A; Turkmenistan vs India C; Vietnam vs Kazakhstan; Sri Lanka vs Macau; India B vs Uzbekistan; Malaysia vs China. Women: India B vs China; India A vs Kazakhstan; Bangladesh vs Turkmenistan; Malaysia vs Uzbekistan; Kyrgystan vs India C; Sri Lanka vs Vietnam. Announcement The All India Chess Federation shall organize the Asian Team Championship for Men and Women, 7-17 April 2003 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The Championships shall be 9 round Swiss System events, separately for Men and Women on the model of the Olympiads, in accordance with the latest FIDE Regulations.
