Aleksandrov shares lead, Venkatesh beats Vakhidov

Top seed Aleksandrov Aleksej (Belarus) led the table along with Yu Ruiyuan (China) with 7.0 points after the eighth round of the SDAT – RMK 4th Chennai Open 2012 International Grandmaster Chess Tournament, at Multipurpose Indoor Stadium, Periamet, Chennai here today.

Half a point behind the leaders at 6.5 points were ten players including GMs Oleksienko Mikhailo (Ukraine), Marat Dzhumaev (Uzbekistan), Hoang Thanh Trang (Hungary), J Deepan Chakkravarthy and S P Sethuraman (both India) among others.

Untitled Chinese Yu Ruiyuan continued his impressive run, holding top seed Aleksandrov Aleksej of Belarus to a draw. The Scotch game, where regular elimination of pieces nullified mutual advantage, peace was signed after 43 moves.

GM Sethuraman overcame fellow IM Siddharth in a complicated game, while local challenger International Master M R Venkatesh moved ahead in standings scoring over Vakhidov Jahongir of Uzbekistan.

Among those with 9 game Norm chances tomorrow were Yu Ruiyaun (China) and Shashikant Kutwal (India) with GM Norm and IM Norm respectively.
