Absolute and Woman Champions

Between the 3rd and 14th of April 2013, the Argentinean Federation of Chess (FADA) conducted and organized by Ing. Mario Petrucci, would run its 87th "Argentina Major National Tournament" and the 65th "Major Women Tournament", both from the 2012 season, which both were forgotten by the previous chess administration. With the presence of Marcel Duchamp Organization (Doctor Eduardo Moccero and the OI Blas Pingas) both contribuited a donation in the amount of U$S 9,000.00, in prices, which it help to carry out both simultaneously, men and women, try-outs at the Villa Martelli Chess premises. A total of 53 players (men and women) competed at this event and 26 official chess players ensure its parity and fairness.

The absolute Tournament was contested in Open Tournament modality, between 53 players, man and woman, 26 of which held some FIDE title. GM Diego Flores (30) from Junin won the tournament with and score of 8.5 over 11, obtaining the Argentina Major Tournament title for third time, he has won in 2005 and 2009.

After winning the tournament GM Diego Flores said: "Now I'm a little calmer, I know that I have a secure place to play the Olympics in Norway. Though today, with 2600 points, it's the third best player in the country, behind Fernando Peralta (2632) and Anton Kovalyov (2606), and the two top-ranked direct classified Olympiad, I'm calmer and with this title, because for 2014 Norway takes more than a year, and you never know how you can vary the Elo, a bad tournament can throw everything the one-year effort."

The second place was for the young Mario Villanueva, the only player who defeated Flores in the 7th round and interrupting their overwhelming start, as the new Argentine chess king had basting six consecutive wins in the first six days of the tournament. Villanueva, who at the awards ceremony was the IM title approved by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), obtained his 1st GM norm for his performance.

The young Argentinian Chess Promise Alan Pichiot (14), is the chess player who participated at an earlier age of Argentine championship final, obtained his first IM norm, after his great performance (ranked in 11th place).

Women Competition.

This tournament counted with the stellar play of Marisa Zuriel, in which she took the first two loses and then come back to win the next five. She end up the day with 7 victories and a draw, taking over by 1-1/2 points, the two runner-up, Miss Ayelen Martinez, student from the “Escuela de Talentos de la Universidad de La Punta,San Luis, Argentina, as well as the 2011 Champion and Miss Florencia Fernandez.

Both Tournaments would certainly excel some of the players to the up-coming 2014 Chess Olympiads, taking place in Norway. Villa Martelli Chess Club has come up with excellent competitive players through-out the years and "Norway 2014" will be a excellent opportunity to show their talents.
