The beautiful resort island of Bali in Indonesia held its first ever FIDE Seminar for Coaches from 30 November to 5 December 2008.
Organised by Gunadarma University under the auspices of the ASEAN Chess Academy which is the FIDE Regional Academy for Asia and endorsed by PERCASI (Indonesian Chess Federation), this ground breaking event saw a total of 23 participants, many who had travelled several days over sea and land to attend.
Key subjects taught included introduction to the FIDE Trainer system and objectives of the seminar including the various roles and responsibilities of chess trainers, the FIDE academies and their activities, the benefits of chess, a case study of chess in schools and the various scholastic progams, chess terminology, basic methods of teaching, opening principles, tactics, combinations and attack and its critical role in providing a foundation for young players, teaching checkmate patterns, international system of signs, endgames, and modern methods of teaching. There were also practical sessions on presentation and teaching lessons.
The seminar also recorded two notables firsts - the participation of Mah Hassan Omar, President of the Malaysia Society of the Blind, a practicing lawyer who himself is an avid chess player and a national coach, and that of a young and talented 16 year old girl who was looking at coaching techniques for her own development!
In the end both were well deserving of being awarded the FIDE Instructor title after making extremely professional presentations.

With total of 10 FI titles awarded, many going to chess professionals involved in taching at their own schools, together with 9 NI titles and 4 DI titles, there was little to for the participants to complain about.

Special mention needs to be made of the event coordinator Bunawan (seated in the middle) whose tireless work and deep pockets made the seminar possible.
