REPORT

Dear Colleagues:
First of all, our cordial greetings from members of the new Chess in Schools Commission, which I chair. The purpose of this report is to inform about the most relevant activities undertaken by us during November 2008 to October 2009.
In our management we could verify that there are several factors that limit the activation of chess projects in schools. The first –and maybe the more important- is the lack, almost absolute, chess teachers trained, updated and certified by the national federations. The second, the lack of a true interest by some federations and governments in jointly organizing this type of proposal; and the third, the lack of resources to buy their own materials for projects such as manuals, books, games and more.
We are very interested in generating an universal project of popularization of chess in the schools of national federations affiliated to FIDE. We have also worked for the creation of an international program of seminars and conferences for the education, training and updating of teachers aspiring chess instructors or teachers.
Remember that in CISC our Mission is “to promote and disseminate the values and social teaching chess; the teaching and practice of chess as a teaching strategy, in the curricula of schools, high schools and universities, and accompany the application and development of projects in the schools of countries affiliated with FIDE”. And remember too, that our Vision is “a world where children and adolescents have the opportunity to train as freethinkers beings to access the virtues chess, understood this as a right and the cultural heritage of mankind”.
In our children chess contribute to the improvement in their levels of reading, writing and handling of numbers, in addition, chess in schools activities will serve as recreation and to take their first steps in their future appreciation for sport. But most importantly, help them learn to think and make decisions for themselves and contribute to the harmonious development of their self-esteem.
That is why we have emphasized on developing workshops with the directives of the national federations interested in starting a chess school projects. We have stressed the need to establish committees of chess in schools dedicated exclusively- to the task of promoting chess from kindergarten to university.
Moreover, during 2009 we have participated in various events to promote chess in schools, we refer to congress, seminars, conferences and relevant competitions such as: 1. International Congress on “Methodology of teaching chess in Russia and Rest of World”, an event held in cooperation with the Russian Chess Federation and the International Sport Chess Union (ISCU) in Moscow in late January. 2. School Chess Championship under the International Festival "Moscow Open 2009". 3. World Conference on "Chess, a game to grow", a congress on chess and cognitive sciences, in cooperation with the Italy Chess Federation developed in Turin – Italy, in February. 4. World School Chess Championship, in cooperation with the Greek Chess Federation, held in Khalithea in February. 5. European School Team Championship in cooperation with the Bulgarian Chess Federation and the Foundation “Konch Morsco" held in Varna in June. 6. The "International Chess and Education Center" was founded and began operations in late June, directed to the characterization of the coaches and school chess instructors are among these activities. 7. Seminar on "Globalization and chess: development of teaching chess in the world society", held in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of Argentina and Argentina Chess Federation (FADA), in Mar del Plata city, last July. 8. International seminar on school chess held in cooperation with the Brazilian Chess Confederation (CBX) in Mendez - Rio de Janeiro, in early August. 9. Lectures on "Policies of the Chess in Schools Commission FIDE" given in the cities of Lobería and La Mar Chiquita with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education and Argentina Chess Federation (FADA), in last July. 10. VI National Evaluation of the "Mission Chess" conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Sports and the Venezuelan Chess Federation (FVA) in Catia La Mar city, in September. 11. International seminar on "Methodology for teaching chess in schools" held in cooperation with the Curacao Chess Federation (CCF) and Curacao Chess Foundation (CCF), in Willemstad city, in late September. 12. Pan American School Chess Championship, held in cooperation with the Colombian Chess Federation (FECODAZ) in Bogotá, in early October. 13. Annual Meeting of the Chess in School Commission, under the 80th FIDE Congress in October, in Halkidiki city, Greece.
However, we still-in programming 2009 - the implementation of some activities, the main ones: 1. Match of the Centenarians between Aaron Schwartzman (100 years old) and Francisco Benkö (99 years old) in Buenos Aires - Argentina, on October 20.
International seminar on "Methodology for teaching chess" in Puebla city -Mexico. 3. Lectures on "Instructional System of Chess" under the Third Meeting of Physical Education and School Sport, in Havana - Cuba in November. 4. II International Seminar on "Chess in Pre scholar Education" in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and the Venezuelan Chess Federation (FVA), in late November in San Juan de los Morros city - Venezuela; 5. Lectures on "A project on Chess School for the Department of Valle del Cauca" in Cali city - Colombia, in early December; 6. International Seminar on “Educational Chess " will be held in Brazil in mid-December.
Based on these activities, I believe that the three -3 - most important events of this period were held in Russia (International Conference on methodology of teaching chess in Russia and Rest of World, with coordination of doctor Alexander Kostiev), Italy (World Conference on "Chess, a game to grow" under the baton of doctor Robert Riviello) and Argentina ("Globalization and chess: development of teaching chess in the world society" produced by professor Jorge Berguier). Our congratulations and appreciation to these colleagues for organizing such experiences.
Mr. President: however, I must point out that problems presented themselves with the visa procedures and the agenda of some federations and ministries of education, we could not respond to requests for visits made by the federations of Indonesia, Thailand, Palau Islands, Libya and Egypt.
In conclusion, we estimate that in 2010 when we will resolve this situation. That is why next year we will be conducting activities in all continents, with emphasis on Asia, Africa Latinoamérica. For this period include visits and meetings in Brazil, Colombia, Curacao, Egypt, El Salvador, Indonesia, Palau Islands, Libya, Mexico and Thailand, among others.
I highlight the great work undertaken by several of our colleagues worldwide movement for school chess, it is our secretary Alexander Kostiev (Russia), Roberto Rivello (ITA), Ignatius Leong (SIN), Leontxo Garcia (Spain), Beatriz Marinello (USA), Jorge Bergier (Argentina), Margaret Murphy (USAVI) and Charles Moura Neto (Brazil), among others. Special recognition to Santiago García Ramos (Mexico), our web-master who coordinates the ajedrezenlasescuelas.com page, and that from this date, so will in collaboration with the Web site of FIDE. Also take this opportunity to thank the support provided by three authorities FIDE: Ali Hazici, Nigel Freeman and Jorge Vega Fernandez. To all of them and on behalf of the members of our committee, thank you very much for your input.
