The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a global institution established in 1889, as the first permanent space for multilateral political negotiations. With headquarters in Geneva, it works with 178 member parliaments from all over the world “to safeguard peace and drive positive democratic change through political dialogue and concrete action”.

This institution celebrated its 140th Assembly last Thursday, April 11th, gathering in Doha more than two thousand legislators and 80 speakers. FIDE’s Executive Director Victor Bologan was one of the attendees, as chief of Republic of Moldova Delegation. He was elected to the Moldovan Parliament on the 24th of February 2019.

"This year, the main topic on the agenda was Parliaments as a platform for raising the level of education in the name of peace, security and the rule of law". Chess is a perfect educative tool for this purpose, and it gave Victor the chance to discuss with IPU’s President, Gabriela Cuevas Baron, about the introduction of chess in the curriculum – a recommendation that some parliaments have already approved in several countries. “We decided to come back to this topic later, next May in Mexico when I will visit Mexico”, explained Bologan.
