The 2022 FIDE Presidential election will be held on August 7, 2022, at the FIDE General Assembly in Chennai, India. Each Member Federation represented in the General Assembly and in the assemblies of FIDE Continents has one vote.

List of FIDE Member Federations having Voting Powers (June 7, 2022)

According to the 2022 FIDE Elections Timeline, by 6 pm CET on June 7, Presidential candidacies had to reach the FIDE Office. Following the deadline, the FIDE Electoral Commission consisting of Roberto Rivello (chairman), Francois Strydom and Lakhdar Mazouz held an online meeting.

Electoral Commission Report (June 7, 2022, Part 1)

In accordance with art. 21.8 of the Electoral Rules, FIDE Offices announce that the Electoral Commission, after a preliminary exam, approved the following list of valid Presidential ticket candidacies:

  • Mr. Andrii Baryshpolets and Mr. Peter-Heine Nielsen;
  • Mr. Inalbek Cheripov and Mr. Lewis Ncube;
  • Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich and Mr. Anand Viswanathan;
  • Mr. Bachar Kouatly and Mr. Ian Wilkinson.

The FIDE Electoral Commission consisting of Roberto Rivello (chairman), Francois Strydom and Lakhdar Mazouz held an online meeting on the 25th of June 2022.

The FIDE Electoral Commission hereby reminds of the following:

  • that on the 7th of July 2022 the deadline will expire for submitting candidacies for the positions of: elected Vice President, Zonal President, Member of the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission, Member of the Constitutional Commission;
  • that the receipt of candidacies is a necessary condition for valid elections;
  • that, in case of absence of valid candidacies for these positions, the correspondent election will not be held in 2022 and would have to be postponed to 2023

FIDE Offices announce that the Electoral Commission, in accordance with FIDE Electoral Rules, after a preliminary exam approved the following lists of:

  • valid candidacies for the position of elected Vice President;
  • valid candidacies for the position of member of the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission;
  • valid candidacies for the position of member of the Constitutional Commission;
  • valid candidacies for the positions of Zonal Presidents;
  • second provisional list of the Member Federations having voting powers.

FIDE Offices communicate that the ELC approved the following Addendum to the Report of the meeting held on 9 July 2022.

The Electoral Commission held an on-line meeting on 23 July 2022. FIDE Offices publish the report of this meeting and announce that the Electoral Commission, in accordance with art. 3.4 of the Electoral Rules, approved the following final lists of the Member Federations having right to vote and of voters.

The Electoral Commission held a meeting in Chennai on the 4th of August 2022, to discuss and decide some complaints and requests received after the publication of the final lists of voters and candidacies.

The meeting was attended by all members of the ELC: Roberto Rivello (chairman), Francois Strydom and Lakhdar Mazouz.

Arkady Dvorkovich has been reelected for a second term as President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) with 157 votes, against 16 for his electoral opponent, the Ukrainian chess Grandmaster Andrii Baryshpolets. A third candidate, the French Bachar Kouatly, withdrew his candidacy after giving his speech before the voting started. Five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand, who was part of Dvorkovich's ticket, is the new FIDE Deputy President.
