Carlsen vs. Nepomniachtchi on board one
The last time these two sat across a board with something serious on it, Carlsen walked away with a fifth world title. On Sunday they meet with their teams locked on identical numbers: 3 match points, 10 game points, and one scrappy win each.
Neither icon earned it himself. Carlsen won a pawn off Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and could not finish the job. Anish Giri lost outright to Pranesh M, a man who was not even supposed to be playing. The Pipers survived because Vidit Gujrathi was ruthless and because Koneru Humpy pounced when Carissa Yip sacrificed her queen, a move too early in a pawn race she had already won.
Ganges did it their way. Levon Aronian took 29 moves to dismantle Wei Yi. Then Polina Shuvalova and Stavroula Tsolakidou swept both Superstar Women’s boards to steal the match by a single point.
The real fight is expected on boards four and five: Divya Deshmukh and Humpy against Shuvalova and Tsolakidou. Ganges won their opener there. The Pipers nearly lost theirs there.

Somebody has to lose twice
Two icons, Vachier-Lagrave and Viswanathan Anand, were both beaten on Saturday. The loser here is 0 from 2, with the table already running away.
The Knights are in worse shape than the scoreline suggests, and the scoreline was 4-10. Anand went down to Javokhir Sindarov after 57 moves. Arjun Erigaisi handed Nihal Sarin a rook-sacrifice masterpiece, got completely winning, but then blundered last. Abhimanyu Mishra pushed for a win in a dead-drawn position and lost it.
Mumba also suffered a defeat, but they landed punches. Pranesh M beat Giri. Harika Dronavalli delivered a mate against Divya after Divya had nearly escaped down a piece. And Vladimir Fedoseev still has not played a single game.
Mumba look like the better side right now. The Knights need Arjun to stop being spectacular and start being clinical.

Can anyone slow these guys down?
Two matches. Two wins. 24 game points, more than the next two teams combined.
Sindarov beat Anand, then held Alireza Firouzja. Daniil Dubov produced the day’s best finish. Nihal escaped a loss and won anyway. Marc’Andria Maurizzi went a perfect 2-for-2 on the Prodigy board on debut day.
Dubov explained the plan afterwards in one line: be solid with White, and try to crush with Black. In a league that pays four points for a win with Black and three for a win with White, that is not swagger. That is arithmetic.
Ganges are the first team good enough to test it. But this is their second match of the day, and Ian Nepomniachtchi will already have faced Carlsen.

The two-time champions are last on the board
Winners in 2023. Winners in 2024. Finalists last season. Currently on zero.
Here is the cruel part: Triveni have 14 game points, more than any team outside the Gambits. They lost 9-10 to Ganges after choosing Black off the toss and turning it into the wildest match of the day. Then they went straight back out and got hit 5-14.
Firouzja has not won a game yet. He had Nepomniachtchi and let him go. The debutants have been the bright spot, with Aravindh Chithambaram and Pranav Venkatesh both banking four-point wins with Black, though Aravindh then walked into Dubov’s combination in match two.
This is Mumba’s second of the day as well. Two tired teams, both desperate. It gets messy.
What we find out by 21:30
Ganges and Mumba both play twice, so the table can look completely different by the end of the night. Two questions carry the day: is anyone capable of stopping the American Gambits, and do Triveni or the Alaskan Knights get on the board before the leaders vanish over the horizon?
